Purchasing products online was once considered to be a risk. Sometimes it can still be risky. Here you will learn about some good ideas to use when you make your next purchase online.

Always make online purchases with a credit card. There are federal and state laws that can protect you when you use a credit card. For example, if you bought something online and paid for it with your credit card but never received the item, you can dispute the charge on your card and there is a good chance you will get your money back.

You have 60 days to file a dispute so don’t waste time. The credit card company will have to inform you that they received your dispute and then 90 days to investigate and decide what to do.

Single use credit cards. Some credit card companies will generate online credit card numbers that are usable one time only. Using this method will enable you to use your credit card information online without actually giving out your credit card number.

Make sure the page is secure. Other parties can intercept the pages that you send and receive on the internet. When you enter your credit card information on a page make sure that the url reads “https”. This means that the page is encrypted and only the intended recipient will be able to read the information.

Shop at established online business. Amazon is an ideal example. They have been in the industry for many years, have made millions of transactions, and are well known as being a safe place to purchase online. Be extra careful if you are buying online via an online auction site like E-bay. Check the reputation and comments about the person you will be buying from.

Read the stores return policy. Purchasing online means you don’t get to see the actual object which you are buying. That can lead to shoes not fitting properly, a piece of furniture being different than expected, or sometimes the item will be damaged during shipping. Knowing if the store will exchange items or reimburse you is important. Also look to see if you are responsible for paying additional shipping charges if you have to exchange or return the product.

Coupon Codes. A lot of online websites have coupon codes which you can enter to receive a discount or free shipping. Open up a new tab and do a quick search to see if you can find any such coupon codes.

Buying presents online. If you are purchasing presents online for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, and so forth, be sure to give yourself plenty of time for the item to ship. A lot of people will understand if you show up without a present and explain to them that it’s still being shipped. But it’s better to just give them the gift.
